How to log unfamiliar foods abroad with an AI food scanner
Traveling and staring at a plate you can't name? How to log foreign dishes accurately with an AI food scanner, even when you don't know the ingredients.
Nothing wrecks a food log like international travel. Menus are in a language you don't read, portions are unfamiliar, and the AI has never seen the specific dish in front of you.
The trick: tell the AI what you don't know
Axiom's scanner has a name field for a reason. If you're in Puebla and you're eating something that looks like a stew of dark meat in a red-brown sauce, type 'mole poblano — chicken, tortillas on the side.' Even a partial guess helps the model narrow down what you're eating.
If you have no idea
- Describe visible components — 'grilled fish, rice, fried plantain'.
- Estimate the portion size in your fist — one fist of protein, one fist of starch.
- Add drinks and sauces in the notes field (that's where hidden calories hide).
Accept the confidence score
Every scan comes with a confidence level. If it's low, don't stress the exact numbers — just log the meal, note the day, and move on. One rough estimate on Tuesday won't derail your week.
